ב"דף השער" של ספר התניא כותב אדה"ז "לבאר היטב איך הוא קרוב מאד בדרך ארוכה וקצרה". וי"ל דבזה מתבטא חידושו של שיטת חסידות חב"ד על שיטת חסידות פולין: שיטת פולין היא ש"צדיק באמונתו יחי' – אל תקרי יחְי' אלא יחַי'", שהעסק והלימוד בפנימיות התורה נעשה ע"י הצדיק, והוא "מחי'" בזה את המקושרים אליו. דרך זו היא "קצרה וארוכה". היא "קצרה" בשטח המקום, כי היא פוטרת אותו מהיגיעה וההשתדלות ביותר הדרושה כדי להבין פנימיות התורה, אבל ב"כניסה לעיר" היא "ארוכה", מכיון שההתקשרות עם הצדיק היא רק בנוגע לנפה"א אבל הנפה"ב והגוף לא התברר עי"ז. אבל שיטת חב"ד, אכן ב"שטח" היא "ארוכה" – צריך להתייגע בעצמו ללמוד ולהבין פנימיות התורה, ובאופן שזה יחדור כל כחות הגלויים עד שגם השכל האנושי יבין אותה, ושהלימוד יביא לידי מעשה, אבל לכן דרך זו היא "קצרה" ביחס למילוי שליחותו.

The Alter Rebbe writes in the title page of the Tanya that the purpose of the sefer is “to explain clearly how it is very near…in a long and short way.” It can be explained that this expresses the unique quality of the approach of Chassidus Chabad over that of Polisher Chassidus: The approach of Polisher Chassidus is based on the verse “A tzaddik lives by his faith” – “Do not read it as ‘lives’ but as ‘gives life,’” meaning that the tzaddik, through his Torah and divine service, “gives life” to those who are connected to him. This path is “short and long”: It is “short” in terms of the effort of the chassid, who is exempted from the tremendous toil and effort required to understand the teachings of the inner dimension of Torah. But when it comes to actually “entering the city,” it is “long,” because the connection to the tzaddik is only through the G-dly soul, while the animal soul and the body are not transformed by it. In contrast, the Chabad approach is “long” in terms of the effort of the chassid, who must personally toil to study and understand the teachings, and in such a way that the teachings penetrates all of the revealed faculties including the human intellect and practical action, but precisely because of this, this path is “short” in terms of fulfilling one’s mission.
